It may not seem the best time for the delivery of life-saving vaccines to poor countries to depend on the world’s capital markets, but a deal brokered by Britain’s prime minister, Gordon Brown, has so far delivered nearly 2 billion dollars for just that purpose.
It’s called the International Finance Facility for Immunisation, (IFFIm) and it’s credited with saving more three million children's lives by delivering basic vaccines. But how does it work, how much does it cost and is it right to take money from future aid budgets to deliver vaccines today?
